Where to Go and When in the UK: Your Month-by-Month Adventure

Where to Go and When in the UK: Your Month-by-Month Adventure

There’s adventure to be found in the UK any time of year, but the trick is figuring out when each spot really shines.

We’ve realised that, for a country this small, there’s a huge amount of culture, history and landscape packed in. From rugged mountains and dramatic coastlines to quiet national parks and overlooked corners, every month unlocks a different side of the UK.

Still, many people stick to the usual summer trips and end up missing quieter paths, seasonal events and special experiences.

Luckily for you, we put together this month-by-month guide to help you discover where to go in the UK throughout the year.

January: Explore the Highlands in Scotland

January is when the Highlands feel at their most powerful and untamed. It’s a month to embrace winter landscapes rather than chase long summit days.

This is the time for quieter glens, snow-dusted ridgelines and immersive mountain experiences that feel a world away from everyday life.

Things to do in January:

  • Skiing & Snowboarding: Make the most of Scotland’s five ski areas for short winter breaks.
  • Winter Mountaineering: Learn or practise winter skills on classic Highland routes with qualified guides.
  • Winter Hillwalking: Explore lower-level routes and Munros with proper winter kit and navigation.

February: Discover Snowdonia (Eryri), North Wales

February is ideal for exploring Snowdonia beyond its busiest paths. With fewer tourists, the landscape feels quieter and more dramatic, especially away from Snowdon itself.

It’s a great month for scenic walks, nearby coastal escapes and soaking up the park’s wild character without the crowds.

Things to do in Snowdonia in February:

  • Classic Walks: Explore routes like Cwm Idwal or follow rivers to waterfalls such as Rhaeadr Ddu.
  • Coastal Walks: Combine mountains with empty beaches on Anglesey or the Llŷn Peninsula.
  • Low-Level Adventures: Focus on valleys, lakes, and ridgelines rather than summit pushes.

March: Explore the Peak District

March marks the shift between winter and spring, and the Peak District feels full of movement and change. Rivers run high, moorlands open up, and the days begin to noticeably lengthen.

This is a brilliant month for walking, cycling and underground exploration before the summer rush.

Activities you can enjoy in March:

  • Hiking & Cycling: Walk Mam Tor, tackle Kinder Scout, or cycle the Monsal Trail.
  • Caves & Caverns: Visit Poole’s Cavern, Speedwell Cavern, or Treak Cliff.
  • Heritage Experiences: Ride a Peak Rail steam train or explore historic villages.

April: Head to the Lake District

April is one of the most rewarding months to visit the Lakes. The landscape feels fresh, waterfalls are flowing, and popular routes are still manageable before peak season.

It’s ideal for mixing outdoor days with village stops and slower exploration.

Activities you can enjoy in April:

  • Spring Walks: Explore classic valleys and lower fells as the landscape comes back to life.
  • Lakes & Water: Take a cruise on Windermere or Ullswater.
  • Unique Experiences: Try alpaca walks or explore literary and cultural landmarks around Grasmere.

May: Adventure Along the Pembrokeshire Coast

May is a standout month for coastal exploration in Wales. Pembrokeshire feels vibrant but not busy, making it perfect for active breaks and family adventures. This is when the coast path, islands and hidden beaches truly shine.

Activities you can enjoy in May:

  • Hike the Coast Path: Walk sections of this stunning National Trail for breathtaking sea views and discover hidden coves like Barafundle Bay.
  • Island Trips: Take a boat to Skomer Island or Caldey Island
  • Try kayaking or coasteering for sea cave and cliff adventures.
  • St David's City: Visit Britain's smallest city, explore the majestic cathedral, and see Bishop's Palace ruins.

June: Enjoy Summer Coastal Adventures

June is one of the best all-round months for UK adventures. Everything is open, accessible and active. Without peak summer pressure. It’s ideal for combining coast, countryside and longer outdoor days. Best time to gear up for a summer adventure.

Activities you can enjoy in June:

  • Rockpooling or relaxing on sandy beaches like North Berwick.
  • Try surfing, paddleboarding or kayaking along scenic coasts.
  • Wild Swimming: Swim in natural pools like Sharrah Pool.
  • Walk the South West Coast Path, the Yorkshire Three Peaks, or the hills in Scotland/Wales.
  • Cycle the Tweed Valley Railway Path or go off-road in the Forest of Dean.

July – Experience Cornwall and Devon

  • Paddleboarding: Calm mornings, scenic coasts.
  • Coasteering: Explore cliffs and coves actively.
  • Sea Swimming: Optimal open-water conditions.

August: Explore the Cairngorms

While many head south in August, the Cairngorms offer warm weather, lively events and beautiful landscapes. Our favourite when travelling during August is the cooler temperatures and wide-open space in the Cairngorms, making it ideal for escaping busier parts of the UK.

September: Slow Down in Northumberland

September is an excellent time for active outdoor activities or retreats as summer crowds begin to thin and the early hints of autumn create a picturesque, pleasant atmosphere.

This season brings calm seas, softer light and fewer visitors to Northumberland’s coast. One of our favourite places in the UK. The slower pace makes exploring more relaxed.

Activities you can do in September:

  • Seahouses Harbour: Fresh seafood, boat watching.
  • Holy Island (Lindisfarne): Cross the causeway (check tides!) for history and atmosphere.
  • Northumberland Coast Path
  • Take a boat trip to the Farne Islands for seals and seabirds.
  • Kielder Park: Gentle hikes, wildlife, or stargaze at the Observatory.
  • Simonside Hills: Enjoy quiet moorland walks.

October: Wander the New Forest

October wraps the New Forest in autumn, with cooler temperatures and vibrant foliage. Cooler days and quieter trails make it perfect for slower, immersive exploration. Some of our favourite autumn walks take in the New Forest’s ancient and ornamental woodlands, which are always breathtaking at this time of year.

Activities you can enjoy in October:

  • Walking through Blackwater Arboretum at Rhinefield, you can experience autumn from around the world,
  • Autumn Walks/Cycles: See foliage and spot wild ponies or deer.
  • See pannage pigs eat acorns.
  • Visit Exbury Gardens for Jewel Lilies and scenery.
  • Spot deer at Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary.
  • Peaceful scenic horse riding through the Heathland.

November: Explore the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog)

November is ideal for atmospheric adventures and mixed indoor/outdoor days. The Brecon Beacons feel expansive and dramatic, with space to slow down and explore.

Exploring Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) in November offers crisp autumn walks, cosy pubs with fires, and unique events like the Hay Festival Winter Weekend, focusing on quieter trails, stunning dark sky stargazing, and festive local markets. Local's favourite, and our top pick, too!
